In 2020, China announced that it will strive to peak carbon dioxide emissions before 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality before 2060 (also known as “dual carbon” goals). This year, China included the “dual carbon” goals in its overall plan for ecological conservation. The ambitious goals, while showing China’s resolve to pursue green development, pose huge challenges to the future energy consumption structure. At the same time, it’s believed that these goals are bound to promote industrial structure upgrading, drive continuous breakthroughs in industrial revolution, energy revolution, technological revolution, and consumption revolution, form a new circular industrial development system, thus having a marked impact on the comprehensive and profound transformation of the social and economic systems.

As an active promoter and practitioner of China’s strategy to peak carbon dioxide emissions and achieve carbon neutrality, H3C has an insightful understanding and is facilitating the implementation of the strategy in various ways. On the one hand, the company is advancing green transformation of the digital industry by making its products and solutions greener through continuous innovation. Today, through artificial intelligence (AI)-oriented innovation and optimization of products, H3C is reducing the energy consumption of digital infrastructure and building data centers with a Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) of less than 1.1. By ensuring rational energy utilization in data centers via intelligent operation and maintenance, H3C is also enabling eco-friendly upgrading of data centers. At the same time, it has rolled out a zero-carbon campus solution, and formulated plans for development in such fields as digital energy technologies and solutions, industrial Internet and the Internet of Vehicles (IoV), creating a digital cornerstone for driving green development.

“Digital Brain” has become the “core engine” of industrial digital transformation across such various domains as smart city and smart energy. Driven by the determination to help fulfill the “dual carbon” goals, H3C has developed digital technologies that can meet emerging demands for carbon monitoring, capture, storage and trading. Meanwhile, it has pooled its technologies and resources to establish a micro-grid management system that meets the requirement of new types of industrial parks for carbon peak and carbon neutrality, helping campuses build a digital system for carbon neutrality. Moreover, H3C is developing and promoting digital solutions targeting the energy industry, creating an integrated energy management system for smart energy cities; it is also promoting the innovation and implementation of solutions related to such fields as net-zero buildings, low-carbon metallurgy and net-zero homes in a bid to realize the in-depth integration of digital innovation and industry scenarios, and explore greater possibilities for energy conservation, emission reduction, and low-carbon development.

Based on its strong capacity for helping the construction of the big data center and the implementation of the strategic deployment of the “Eastern Data and Western Computing” initiative, H3C is contributing to the building of a sound economic system featuring green, low-carbon development, and advancing the resource complementarity and adjustment of energy mix for the western and eastern regions. H3C has so far participated in the digital construction of many major and key energy projects, including an integrated energy service sharing platform in Zhejiang province, a new energy centralized control center in Inner Mongolia autonomous region, and an integrated platform for centralized control of hydropower in Sichuan province, providing comprehensive digital capabilities for the production and consumption of energy.

As a practitioner of the “dual carbon” goals, H3C has followed strictly relevant national standards in its design and manufacturing of products, and played an active part in the formulation of green standards; by integrating cloud platforms into all of its day-to-day work in its business operation, the company has significantly driven telecommuting while indirectly saving for itself more than 10 million yuan ($1.54 million) worth of energy consumption. Meanwhile, H3C has launched a green energy machine room project, which is expected to reduce the annual electricity consumption cost by nearly 100 million yuan. Efforts made by the company to build a green supply chain through close cooperation with over 400 international suppliers will thus generate greater social benefit and value. By facilitating the building of smart factory and smart campus as well as carbon neutrality moves, among other new endeavors, H3C will be able to create a green manufacturing system, therefore speeding up the pace of both itself and the ecosystem towards green growth.

The commitment to peaking carbon emissions and achieving carbon neutrality not only signals a systemic energy revolution, but more of a revolution that will have widespread and profound influence on the economic and social development. It’s believed that as big strides are made towards the carbon peak and neutrality goals, development will be gradually decoupled from greenhouse gases, triggering a new round of energy revolution and economic structure upgrading. As a result, the quality and efficiency of development will be further improved, which accords closely with the ideas and values of digital economy and green development.
