The Advantages and Disadvantages of Travelling
by Train Travelling by train has many advantages. For example, there are no traffic jams. The trains are fast and comfortable. You can use the time in different ways. You can just sit and read something, or you can enjoy the scenery out of the window. You can also have a meal in the buffet car or go to sleep in the sleeping car. However, travelling by train also has some disadvantages. Firstly, you have to start early in order to catch a train, but trains are sometimes delayed. Secondly, trains are often crowded with passengers. Lastly, trains can't take you from door to door. You still need a bus or a taxi to take you to or from the railway station. In a word, I prefer travelling by train to travelling by car. I feel more relaxed when I reach my destination.

M: I actually went to state primary school and I started just after my fifth birthday,um...you know most people start at five and then they can leave when theyre sixteen. I actually stayed on until I was eighteen. W: So, basically it's more or less the same starting age. But, er...when do you finish in the States? M: Well, we finish, er...you can go to high school, most people finish high school, but you can actually leave school legally at the end of the tenth grade which is about sixteen... when you are sixteen. W: So, more or less actually the same thing. And, er...as far as examinations are concerned, I mean, is it, um...I think it's very different, isn't it? M: Well, exams are not quite the same, we don't have as many exams in America as they do in Britain.
Part IV. Passage
Listen to the passage and then choose the correct answer. The passage will be read twice. I arrived at this town quite late, after ten o'clock, I suppose, and looked for somewhere to stay. I didn't book a room anywhere, because I didn't expect to stay there. The main hotel was full, but the woman on the reception desk told me there was a small guest house down the road. I left the car where it was and I went down the road and in fact I walked past the guest house, because I saw there were no lights on. I knocked on the door—there was no bell, or anything—and a man opened the door. He was wearing a very dirty shirt and the television was on. I asked if he had a room and without saying a word, he picked up a key from behind the desk and pushed a registration form to me. I wrote my name, but not my address. I didn't know why, I felt there was something wrong. I saw that all the keys were on their hooks, so either all the other guests were out or I was the only person to stay there. I followed him up some very dirty stairs—there was no lift, of course—and he showed me a very dusty room. He gave me the key and closed the door. I sat down on the tiny single bed and wondered what to do. It was a horrible room with a washbasin, but no shower or toilet or anything. I decided to leave but I was frightened by the man downstairs. I ran downstairs and walked quickly past him, but he didn't look up. I quickly said, “I left my suitcase in my car”, and ran out of the door, up the street, and locked myself in the car—I was so scared. I slept in the car that night.
