General Procedure for the Synthesis of (S,2S)-3a. The nickel-(II) complex of glycine (S)-1a (200 mg, 0.40 mmol) was dissolved in DMF (2 mL). Sodium hydroxide (19.2 mg, 0.48 mmol) was added at ambient temperature. Next 1,1,1-trifluoro-4-iodo butane 2a (104 mg, 0.44 mmol) was added and the reaction mixture was stirred for 0.5 h. The reaction was quenched by pouring the crude reaction mixture over 30 mL of aq. sat. NH4Cl. The suspension was extracted with ethyl acetate (3 times). The combined organic layers were dried with MgSO4, concentrated, and purified by column chromatography on silica gel (petroleum ether/ethyl acetate =1/1) to give (S,2S)-3a as a red solid.
