讀到一個句子

The bus driver sounded his horn, whereupon the car driver deliberately reduced his

speed and delayed the progress of the bus.

公共汽車司機按了喇叭，于是汽車司機故意放慢速度，耽誤了公共汽車的行駛。

whereupon   現(xiàn)代英語中不太使用，不過在閱讀中偶爾會遇到，不了解此詞用法者，不免

會感到困惑。

whereupon 是連詞，主要有兩個用法。

1）引導一個并列分句，相當于 and then, and afterwards引導的并列分句，表示“不

久之后”、“接著”、“然后” 等意思（You use whereupon to say that one thing 

happens immediately after another thing）

例句：

She told a tale, whereupon he laughed heartily.

她講了一個故事，他聽了開懷大笑。

I told her she looked fat, whereupon she threw the entire contents of a saucepan 

at me and burst into tears.

我告訴她她看上去很胖，她馬上把一整鍋飯菜都朝我摔過來，然后放聲大哭。

He won the lottery and received his check whereupon he immediately gambled it

all away.

他中了彩票，收到了支票，隨即就把錢全賭光了。

I ate seafood whereupon I became sick as I didn't know I was allergic to clams.

Eventually he began sobbing and praying for a miracle, whereupon a lone figure on

等意思 （You use whereupon to say that one thing happens usually as a result of it.）

He insulted her, whereupon she slapped him.

He refused to hand over her money, whereupon there was a fight.

shots were discharged.
