A Captain is the leader of an entire vessel and the highest authority at sea.

船長(zhǎng)就是全船的領(lǐng)導(dǎo)人和最高指揮官。

Every ship, from a small yacht to a large merchant vessel, is operated under the authority of a captain. A qualified ship captain should possess a Captain’s certificate of competence, have vast experience of operating a ship at sea and have good communication and management skills with all his crew members.

Today, I’m very honored to be on board of this large container ship owned by Maersk Company. And in order to help you to fully understand a captain’s job and responsibilities, I’m going to have an interview with the Captain on this ship.

Hello, captain. Today, it’s my great honor to be on board of this large container ship owned by Maersk company. In China today, we have a large number of students studying navigation and some of them want to be a captain in the future. So it’s my great honor to have this interview with you. So first of all, can you introduce yourself briefly to us, such as your name and your nationality?

A:

Yes, my name is Tommy. I am a captain in Maersk Line. And I have been caption for approximately four years now. And now, I am a captain on the Munkebo Maersk, which is one of the largest container vessels in the world. My normal work, the six months a year, I am out sailing, is to sail the ship from Europe to far east Asia. Here in China, it’s where we turn around and go back to Europe. And otherwise, privately, I am a father, have two kids and a wife at home.

Yeah, OK. We want to know how long you have been working as a seafarer and how many years it took you to become a captain.

A:

I started back in 1995, as a cadet in Maersk Line. And then I started the program for becoming an officer, and that was four and a half years. It is different all over the world for how long it is going to take you to become an officer. But as we, in Denmark, take the entire exam up to the master’s degree in one row. Then after four and a half years, you need sailing experience and company’s approval when you become a higher rank. So, in 2000, I came out as an officer, the third officer, sailed for one year and then became second, had another three years of second officer before I became the chief officer. And then it was back in … (now it’s 2017), four years ago, I became master, and had four different ships now, as a captain. And now (I am) a regular captain on Munkebo Maersk back to back.

From your experience, we can clearly understand that it will take our graduates many years to becone a captain because they have to first serve as deck officers and continue to gain experience…

You start with the lower rank, the first you need is to get experience or to learn through being a cadet. And then you start being a third officer, a second officer and then Chief officer. But it also depends on what type of ship you choose to sail. In some vessels, the advancement is faster. In container vessels, if you want to sail the big ships, like this ship, it will take time before you reach a position as a master, because it is a huge responsibility.

Ok. Today, many of our students have a strong passion for seafaring and some of them have a dream of becoming a captain. So can you simply tell us what role you are playing on the ship every day?

A:

My role on the ship, let’s say it form the legal point of view, to begin with, I am no longer a sailor, even though I sail on the ship and continue sailing as I always have done before, I am no longer, by law, a sailor. I am the company’s representative on board, that means, my job is to represent the company to the world around me and to the crew. And I am overseeing the work that happens on board in all aspects, that goes for safe navigation, it goes for human relationship, that means, I go and talk to the crew on board, make sure that they feel well, and if there should be something discomfort or any kind, I will take care of it for them. I also make sure that we live up to all national and international laws and regulations, including the company’s procedures.

Q:

Can you give our students more details about your specific responsibilities on the ship, for example, like the navigation and like the human resource and so on?

A:

As a captain, I am on a 24-hour stand-by. That means, all crew members can call on me every time they want, at any time of the day. If it has to do with navigation, if there is heavy traffic on the sea where we are sailing, I will be called on the bridge to make the navigational decision that has to be made. In some areas, we are not the only ship within our visibility range, that can be several hundred ships, and it is quite difficult for an officer to oversee when you do not have a huge experience, background to deal with the situation. Otherwise, when it comes to my responsibility, you have to consider that I am sailing the entire world and I have to fulfill the requirement, the law for each country I call, including my own country, which I am not in, including the company’s rules and regulations and procedures. So, my work area is quite large, it is not just the ship, it is the entire work.

Then how do you manage your crew members especially?

A:

Managing my crew members, I have with me officers, and especially my chief officer, who assists me a lot in that aspect. Because he works with them face to face on a daily basis, where I then mostly see people when they are on their work place or if we go for dinner, lunch together. But still, you try to have a conversation more or less with everyone on board. Because the ship can sail without its captain, but the captain cannot sail the ship without its crew. So, you have to have a human relationship with your crews as well all the time and understand their wellbeing and their work being done. That’s also being said, I have to know every job aspect they have.

Just now you have said that you are the representative of the whole company, so can you tell us something more about how you keep this external contact?

A:

We have, of course, access to communication that goes all of the ship. We have all the equipment which is located in our radio station, we have internet access as well, we are sending mails to our local agencies in the various ports we are calling and the advices that if there is any change in rules or regulations and I, then, make sure we fulfill those. Also, my company tells me if there is any change in rules or regulations in Denmark, and everything is coming in by mail. I might be handling, on a quiet day, 20 or 30 mails a day, on a busier day, we could have 150 to 200 mails a day that needs to be handled and it all goes to my mailbox and put me to handle.

So finally, Captain. Can you simply say something to our students if they want to be a captain in the future, what qualities they should possess?

A:

(To) a personal, a maritime student who is today sailing, and wants to go the sea and aims for being captain, I would say one of the biggest quality is to be open-minded. You have to go on board and say, I am new to this, and I need to learn. The captain would make sure that I learn, and so will the chief officer. But I also have to question the chief officer and the captain because they are not always right. The new students that come on to the ship, they have the newest theoretical education and they might have a knowledge we on board have not been aware of, so they can also share when they come to us. And otherwise, I would say, enjoy your stay on board and do not aim, do not put everything on becoming a captain. Aim for being good at your position and your position as captain will show up one day.
