Lesson Design of Unit9 My Favorite Subject is Science. Good morning, everyone! I am very glad to share my lesson design with you. I’ll present my lesson plan from 5 aspects: (1) analysis of the teaching material and learners, (2) teaching objective, key and difficult points, (3) teaching procedure, (4) blackboard design and (5) reflection. Let’s begin with the analysis of the teaching material and learners. I. Analysis of the teaching material and learners My teaching material is from Unit 9 of Book 2, PEP. The title of this unit is My favorite subject is science. And the content of this lesson is talking about our favorite subject, focusing on the new words about different subjects and the new sentences. This is the first period of this unit and most of my Ss don’t know how to speak these subjects in English. However, they all familiar with these subjects. They have these classes every day. Therefore, the topic of this unit is close to them. They will have interest in it. I will use this advantage to teach them how to talk about this topic in English. My Ss of this age are active. They have a certain ability to speak English. The beautiful pictures can arouse their interest. Some Ss are active in class, and some Ss don’t like English. Therefore, I will have Ss study in a relaxing atmosphere so that they can understand the new knowledge easily. II. Teaching objectives, key and difficult points Up to now, I have shown my understanding of the teaching material and learners’ level. Actually, the design of the lesson is not only based on the materials and learners, but also on the learning objectives of this lesson. The first one is knowledge objective. Ss can master the new words: math, Chinese, English, science, geography and history. They can master the new sentences: What’s your favorite subject? My favorite subject is…And they can use the new sentences to make dialogues. Secondly, ability objective. Ss can use new sentences to talk about favorite subject with others in daily life. They can do some simple activities under the teacher’s guidance. Thirdly, moral objective. To improve Ss the passion of learning English. Let them learn to team work with others. Besides, the Ss also develop their learning strategy. Key points are : (1) to master new words : such as math, Chinese, English, science, etc. ; (2) to use new sentences to make dialogues: What’s your favorite subject? My favorite subject is … Difficult points are : (1) how to let Ss master the new words and sentences(2) how to let Ss finish the exercise or activity by team work positively. In order to achieve the objectives, stress key points and break through difficult points, I will design the following teaching procedure. III. Teaching procedure The lesson is divided into 5 stages, that is, lead-in, presenting the new materials, practice, summary and homework. In lead-in stage, I will show three pictures about the food which I like to eat. They are apple, hamburger and ice cream. And I use the smiling face to describe how much I like these food. I give apple three smiling faces, hamburger two smiling faces and ice cream one smiling face. Then I will say, ”I like apple, hamburger and ice cream. But my favorite food is apple. Can you guess what’s the meaning of favorite.”And I will show another picture about a syllabus. Then I will say, ” There are many different subjects in the syllabus. Can you guess what’s the meaning of subject? Through these two questions, I elicit the words favorite and subject. Ss will get the meaning of favorite subject. In presenting the new materials stage, I design to teach Ss the new words and sentences. I will use the pictures to lead Ss learn the new words. At first I will show a picture about a math class. Then I will ask Ss, “Look at this picture. What class are they having?” Ss will answer my question in Chinese. Then I will say, “Yes, they are having a math class.” And I will teach Ss how to speak the word “math” in English and repeats some times to let Ss remember it. After that, I will repeat this process to teach other new words. Then I will have two exercises to practice the new words. The first exercise is Matching. I will Show some different textbooks about different subjects and give the new words to that Ss to match them. The second exercise is a guessing game. I will show different pictures about different subjects to let Ss guess What subject they are. Based on the above learning, they have learned the new words. Then I will use these new words to teach new sentences. I will say, “Do you still remember the meaning of favorite subject? Now I want to ask you what’s your favorite subject.” Then ask several Ss to answer the question. Write the new sentences on the blackboard and lead Ss to read the new sentences. In practice stage, I will design two activities. The first activity is make a survey. I will show the pictures which I have shown them in the lead-in stage again. And I will say, “ Do you still remember this, I use the smiling face to describe how much I like these food. So we can also use the smiling face to describe how much we like these subjects.” Then I will let Ss finish the survey chart by using the smiling face. The second activity is pair work. Two Ss to use the new sentences to make dialogues according to the survey. At the end of the class, I will summarize what they have learnt today and present homework. It’s a must for everyone. The Ss are required to design an English syllabus by using the new words. IV. Blackboard design The following is my blackboard design. I will write down title Unit 9 My favorite subject is science. at the top of the blackboard. And let the new words on the right, the new sentences in the middle of the blackboard. V. Reflection During my teaching, I’ll try my best to get my class alive and encourage the Ss to talk with each other in English. I think the general aim of English teaching is to improve the ability of using English. I’ll use this to guide my teaching. Make the Ss to love the interesting English and me.
