Currently, it is being overused as the first word in the answer to ANY question. For instance, 'How did you learn to play the piano? ' Answer: 'So my dad was in a classical music club...' “So”這個詞都被用濫了,幾乎回答任何問題都能用它來開場。比如: How did you learn to play the piano?(你怎么學的彈鋼琴?)答:So my dad was in a classical music club... (所以說,我爸當時在一個古典音樂俱樂部里……) Tune in to any news channel and you'll hear it. The word serves no purpose in the sentence and to me is like fingernails on a chalkboard. So, I submit the extra, meaningless, and overused word “so.” 幾乎什么新聞里你都能聽到。這詞對于整個句子表達來說毫無意義。聽著就跟指甲劃過黑板一樣刺耳。所以說,我點名“so”這個被濫用又廢話的單詞。 Politicians, especially, are using this word when asked a question and not answering said question. 特別是政客,都愛用這個詞來回避提問。 Frequently used to begin a sentence, particularly in response to a question, this tiresome and grammatically incorrect replacement for 'Like,' or 'Um,' is even more irksome…It hurts my ears, every single time I hear it! 聽著累心的一個詞,比“額(Um)”、“就像(Like)”還招人厭,而且還毫不合乎語法。每每聽到都深深滴傷害了我的耳朵! So it's getting really annoying. So can we please put a stop to this? 所以說這詞兒真是太煩人了。所以說我們能別這么說了嗎? Conversation Now we are all encouraged to have a “conversation,” and everything will somewhat be magically resolved. 好像只要來次“談話/會談”,啥事就都順水推舟、水到渠成了。 Over the past five years or so, this word has been increasingly used by talking heads on radio, television and in political circles to describe every form of verbal communication known to mankind. It has replaced 'discussion', 'debate', 'chat' ,'discourse', 'argument', 'lecture', 'talk'….all of which can provide some context to the nature of the communication. Perhaps the users feel that it is a word that is least likely to offend people, but I consider it to be imprecise language that, over time, dumbs down the art of effective discourse. 近五年來,這個單詞被使用的頻率一路飆升,廣播、電視、政治圈里,只要是人類用語言溝通的事兒都會用“conversation(談話/會談)”這個單詞來表達。“Conversation”已經(jīng)代替了“discussion(討論)”、“debate(辯論)”、“chat(攀談/聊天)”、“discourse(論述)”、“argument(爭論)”、“l(fā)ecture”(演講)、“talk(說話/討論/談話)”等可以更準確體現(xiàn)交流的特定含義的詞匯。估計是覺得“conversation(談話/會談)”這個單詞是最中立的,最不會冒犯別人,然而卻大大破壞了語言的有效性和準確性。 Used by every media type without exception. No one listens. 無一例外,所有媒體都躺槍。只要一說“某某進行了某某談話”,就根本沒人聽了。 Have one, start one, engage in one. Enough. 進行了某項會談,開始了某種會談,參加了某個會談。真夠了。 Problematic A corporate-academic weasel word, according to the Urban Dictionary. 美國著名的在線俚語詞典Urban Dictionary評論:“這是個聽起來很考究,其實含糊其辭、不明所以的單詞”。 Somewhere along the line, this word became a trendy replacement for 'that is a problem.' I just hate it. 不知啥時“Problematic”(有問題的/疑難的)開始流行,已經(jīng)取代了“that is a problem.”(這是個問題)。我太討厭這詞了。 Anything that the speaker finds vaguely inconvenient or undesirable, such as an opposing political belief or bad traffic. Contrast things that are self-evidently taken to be problematic with, say, actual problems like a hole in the ozone layer or a job loss. 只要啥事稍微覺得有點兒不好表達或者不受歡迎就用這個詞來形容,比如發(fā)表政治觀點,又或者只是談論交通堵塞。很多事實比如環(huán)境問題或者失業(yè),誰都知道“是個問題”,還用“problematic”這詞來形容,不是廢話么? Stakeholder A word that has expanded from describing someone who may actually have a stake in a situation or problem, now being over-used in business to describe customers and others. 這個單詞原本是用于形容某人確確實實與某個情況或某個問題相關。而如今在商業(yè)圈卻被濫用來形容顧客或者其他并不真正相關的人。 Often used with “engagement.” If someone is disengaged, they're not really a stakeholder in the first place. LSSU, please engage your stakeholders by adding this pretentious jargon to your list. Stakeholder(股東/利益相關者)這個單詞常與engagement一起使用。如果某股東撤股了,他就不是股東了。某相關人員不再“相關”了,他就不是“相關人員”了好嗎?求LSSU大學的相關人員將這個矯情的行話入選榜單! Dr. Van Helsing should be the only stake holder. 范海辛才是唯一的“木棍(stake)持有者(holder)”。 友情提示:Stake有木棍的意思,該網(wǎng)友將stakeholder惡搞拆成了stake+holder,而范海辛是傳說中的吸血鬼獵人,傳說木棍穿心可以殺死吸血鬼你懂得↓↓↓ Price Point Another example of using two words when one will do. 另一個明明僅說一個詞就能表達卻偏偏要用兩個單詞的例子。 This alliterative mutation seems to be replacing the word ‘price’ or ‘cost.’ It may be standard business-speak, but must it contaminate everyday speech? 這個押頭韻(首字母相同)的短語貌似是替代了“price(價格)”或“cost(費用)”。它是可以用于商務用語,但非得在日常用語里也這么用嗎?該網(wǎng)友還舉例:比如某醫(yī)療雜志里的這句:“Although the ‘price point’ of effective new drugs...may initially be out of reach for many patients...” (雖然這些有療效的新藥起初對很多患者來說價格太過昂貴。)這里用price(價格)不就好了,非要用price point(價格點)嗎? Secret Sauce Usually used in a sentence explaining the ‘secret’ in excruciating public detail. Is this a metaphor for business success based on the fast food industry? 這個詞經(jīng)常被用來解釋、爆料某件超級煩人的公眾細節(jié)。難道這是基于快餐行業(yè)成功的一個隱喻么?(“secret sauce”是秘方/秘籍/秘密武器/寶典的意思,按字面意思來看即“秘密的調(diào)料”。) It has become too frequent in business discussions. I am tired of it. 這詞在商務圈兒里已經(jīng)被濫用了。真煩人。 Break the Internet An annoying bit of hyperbole about the latest saucy picture or controversy that is already becoming trite. 又一個用來吸睛卻夸張到討厭的短語,常用于形容某張艷照或某件引起爭議的八卦等,其實早就是陳詞濫調(diào)了。 Meaning a post or video or whatever will have so much Internet traffic that it will ‘break the internet.’ It’s being used for every headline and video. Ridiculous. 用于形容一條火爆的帖子或者視頻被瘋傳,會“刷爆網(wǎng)絡/朋友圈” (break the internet)。幾乎所有頭條或視頻標題都用這個詞兒。真搞笑。 I hope the list doesn’t ‘break the internet.’ (How else would I read it next year)? 我希望這個“最招人厭的單詞榜單”沒有“刷爆互聯(lián)網(wǎng)”,要不然我明年還咋看新一屆榜單啊? Presser This shortened form of 'press release' and 'press conference' is not so impressive. 這個“press release(媒體報道)”或“press conference(新聞發(fā)布會/記者招待會)”的簡稱并不能深入人心。 Not only is there no intelligent connection between the word 'presser' and its supposed meaning, this word already has a definition: a person or device that removes wrinkles. Let's either say ‘press conference’ or ‘press release’ or come up with something more original, intelligent and interesting! Presser這個單詞和它想表明的含義之間并沒有什么考究的聯(lián)系,而且presser這個詞原本已經(jīng)有“壓制工”或者“壓榨機”的意思了。 This industry buzzword has slipped into usage in news reporting and now that they have started, they can't seem to stop using it. 這個工業(yè)術語開始在新聞報道中被廣泛使用了。就不能消停點兒嗎?(press這個詞是新聞媒體的意思) Manspreading A word that is familiar to those in bigger cities, where seats on the bus or subway are sometimes difficult to find. 這個單詞在公交車、地鐵擁擠(沒座位)的大城市里很流行。來形容某人占了不止一個座位。 Men don't need another disgusting-sounding word thrown into the vocabulary to describe something they do…You're just taking too much room on this train seat, be a little more polite... 人類不需要再多一個惡心的單詞添進詞典里了。有禮貌點兒說你多占了個座位就行了。 Vape Vape and vaping are used to describe the act of ‘smoking’ e-cigarettes (another strange word) since the products emit vapor instead of smoke. Vape(電子香煙)、vaping(抽電子煙)其實就是smoking e-cigarettes。這個新造出來的詭異單詞來源是因為電子香煙噴出的是蒸汽(vapor)而不是“煙(smoke)”。是啊世紀君也很討厭新造單詞,本來腦容量就不夠又得多記好多詞匯、好多新用法有木有。 Giving Me Life The phrase refers to anything that may excite a person, or something that causes one to laugh. 這個單詞用來形容任何能點燃你興趣、讓人發(fā)笑的東西或事情。投票者認為這是個被濫用且夸張的短語。例如: Honey, that dress you got on is giving me life! This video of a guy falling over while running from a spider is giving me life! Physicality We had to include one for the sports fans. John Kollig of Jamestown, N.Y., says this is overused by every sports broadcaster and writer. 我們得為體育迷們選這個單詞。幾乎每個體育播音員或撰稿人都愛濫用這個單詞。(physicality是“肉體性”,著實很費解啊。) I am not sure who is responsible, but over the last 12-18 months you cannot watch a sporting event, listen to a sports talk show on radio, or anything on ESPN without someone using this term to attempt to describe an athlete or a contest. 都不知道誰該為這個詞負責。在過去的一年多里,只要你看個體育賽事,聽個體育節(jié)目或者任何體育頻道里都有人用這個詞來形容某個運動員或比賽。 Every time I hear them say it, I change the channel. 只要在電視里聽到這個詞,我就換臺。 What the heck does it mean? 這詞到底是什么鬼? 另外,在《紐約時報》的號召下,推特網(wǎng)友們也紛紛給出了自己最討厭的詞匯,比如bae(baby的一種寫法), 動不動就用literally(字面上來說), whatever(……之類的), selfie(自拍),Trump等等。好吧,已被惡搞無數(shù)的美國總統(tǒng)參選人唐納德·特朗普(Donald Trump)又一次躺槍↓↓↓ So,你最討厭的英語詞匯是啥?又或者中文單詞?戳評論說說吧~ 【福利】微信訂電子報5折起!回復“訂報”查看詳情。點擊“閱讀原文”,開啟英語讀行俠,世紀君帶你刷題帶你飛~ |
